Specifically, we are looking a PhD student to work on one of the following topics. 1) Signal processing and information- theoretic study of Cognitive radio 2) Application of random matrix theory to signal processing and communications 3) Signal processing and information- theoretic study of cooperative communications This project demands that the research student already possesses exceptional knowledge in advanced signal processing and communication together with very high mathematical ability and programming skills. In particular the PhD student needs to have prior knowledge in applied mathematics, multivariate statistical analysis, information theory and should be familiar with various wireless communication techniques. The awards cover approved fees and a tax-free maintenance allowance of £13,290 per annum and are available to UK, EU and overseas citizens.

Candidates who take (or have taken) the GRE must explicitly indicate to the ETS that the Scuola Normale Superiore is (one of) the institution( s) to which results are to be sent. The Committee will evaluate whether the candidates have passed the test or not, and the score received. Candidates who obtain a position in the PhD program at the Scuola Normale will be reimbursed the application costs of the Subject Test.

Application for admission to the competition can be made for only one subject area and can be presented no more than twice.
The application, written out as per the attached facsimile (Attachment A), addressed to the President of the Scuola Normale Superiore, Piazza dei Cavalieri, 7 – 56126 PISA, must arrive to the Scuola Normale no later than 30 June 2009.
Late arrival of the application and related materials, no matter what the cause, even if posted by the deadline, will result in non-admission to the competition.

up to 40 positions are reserved for EU candidates (candidates with a citizenship of a country belonging to the European Union) holding a Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications or an equivalent title in the disciplines related to the Information and Communication Technologies. Of these, the four best ranked candidates resident outside Italy will receive a support by Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna for accommodation.
Additional financial support may be available after the selection.

- two copies of their Curriculum Vitae et Studiorum. Please, use the EU model
- photocopy of Candidate's University Master Degree (to be translated in Italian or in English except those written in French, German, Spanish);
- detailed list of academic courses taken. This list should contain information regarding credits, units (or equivalent) received, the grades received for each class taken, and the date when the final (or semester) examination was taken;
- a copy of their degree thesis (or two abstracts in English) and a copy of any other publication that they deem suitable;

- g) two copies of a detailed Research Project, of no more than 3,000 words, which will describe the research activities that applicants would like to perform during the PhD course.
