Project : Study of O-GlcNAc glycosylation of FoxO1 the betapancreatic Cell O-GlcNAc glycosylation of cytosolic and nuclear proteins constitutes a reversible post-translational modification, analogous to phosphorylation, which now appears as a major player in the regulation of cell signalling. This modification depends on glucose concentrations, allowing a regulation of protein activities
according to the metabolic environment of the cell. O-GlcNAc modification could therefore participate in the deleterious effects associated with chronic hyperglycaemia observed in diabetes (glucotoxicty) .

PhD. Vacancy Industrial Quality Monitoring based on Stati

PhD. Vacancy Industrial Quality Monitoring based on
Statistical Process Control (SPC) Techniques€ ¢â’ ’½
Statistical Process Control (SPC)
is a widely used framework for monitoring industrial processes. Within SPC, control charts are a powerful
tool to detect deviations from normal operation, although they are mainly fit
to processes with a fixed target. Such
fixed target, however, is not present in numerous applications and the proposed
research will focus on such nonstationary processes. Examples are ubiquitous and include production
processes in the agro-food sector but also within the framework of monitoring
industrial equipment that is subject to degradation.
Part of the research fits in the
framework of an interdisciplinary research project entitled € ¢â’ ’¼Prognostics for
Optimal Maintenance (POM)€ ¢â’ ’½. It is
coordinated by the Flanders Mechatronics Technology Centre (FMTC). The goal of the project is toprovide the tools needed to improve
the way maintenance of industrial machinery is done. Today maintenance is regarded as a necessary
burden to keep the machines running. However,
companies agree that it would be much better if they could step down from this
image and innovate the way machines and
maintenance are sold. The POM consortium will leverage on the experience the
industry has gained in order to solve a complex optimization problem:
how to provide a better maintenance of industrial machines at a lower total
cost of ownership. POM will develop tools and methodologies that will
help machine builders to reduce the costs and market the whole assemble of
machine plus maintenance. Our team is
mainly involved in developing Statistical Process Monitoring algorithms to
detect anomalies during machine operation. Those anomalies then serve as input for lifetime prediction models
developed by our partners.
Keywords: Statistical
Process Control (SPC), nonstationary processes, degradation
Profile: The candidate should preferably hold a degree
in Statistics, Bioscience Engineering, Engineering or Physics.
Interested? Please send your CV and motivation letter to bart.deketelaere@ biw.kuleuven. be. We will contact you soon!

The Department of Linguistics & TESOL at The University of Texas at Arlington
would like to announce the availability of five assistantships for new students
admitted for study in our PhD program starting in Fall 2010. These graduate
teaching assistantships will have a 9 month stipend of $15,300 and cover tuition
for 9 hours of coursework a semester (9 hours is a full-time load).

Our Department has an established doctoral program, with strengths in language
documentation, formal linguistics (syntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonology,
phonetics), corpus linguistics, and second language acquisition (especially
experimental approaches to SLA). Faculty strengths also include Asian,
Austronesian, and Native American languages. We are hiring two new faculty this
year, one in language documentation and syntax and another in second language
acquisition. Facilities include a new Speech Sounds Lab with a soundproof booth
and a portable ultrasound. The graduate students in our Department also organize
an annual student conference that includes the Yumi Nakamura Prize in
Linguistics, which awards a cash prize to the top presentations at the conference.

Because these assistantships were just announced by our Graduate School, we
suggest applicants submit their materials by February 12, 2010 for fullest
consideration for admission and this funding program. Application information
