PhD Scholarship in Applied Mathematics at DTU
8 positions for working in the DTU team of NanoPlast are open for start during the spring of 2011. NanoPlast is supported by the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation and started October 1. 2010. NanoPlast will run for 4 years.
Nanoplast is a highly profiled advanced technology platform with participation from 11 highly dedicated industrial partners and 5 DTU departments (DTU Nanotech, DTU Mechanical Engineering, DTU Fotonik, DTU Mathematics and DTU Danchip).
Micro- and nanometer structuring is proven to be an efficient method to functionalize surfaces to obtain effects such as: self-cleaning, antireflective, iridescence, light absorption, surface joining properties, and color-appearance. Hence, the vision of NanoPlast is to develop and implement a technology platform that will enable Danish producers of injection molded plastic components to use nanostructure topography functionalized surfaces in their existing products, as well as to introduce new innovative products.
DTU Mathematics is looking for a candidate for 1 PhD scholarship. DTU Mathematics carry out research and teaching within the four main disciplines: applied functional analysis, dynamical systems, geometry, discrete mathematics and coding theory.
The scope of this PhD project is to develop dynamical mathematical models for surface wetting and de-wetting on nano-structured curved polymer surfaces with self-cleaning properties. The study involves determination of liquid drop shapes from liquid-surface and liquid-vapour interfacial energies using mathematical models based on the Laplace-Young equation or methods including droplet internal stresses. An important part is the development of numerical schemes, implementation of models on computers and simulations. The work will be conducted in close collaboration with experimentalists. Start of PhD project from: December 1, 2010.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering, physics, applied mathematics or equivalent academic qualifications. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated qualifications within mathematical modelling of physical and/or mechanical systems, numerical analysis of PDEs, nano science and applied mathematics.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
