Austronesian, and Native American languages. We are hiring two new faculty this
year, one in language documentation and syntax and another in second language
acquisition. Facilities include a new Speech Sounds Lab with a soundproof booth
and a portable ultrasound. The graduate students in our Department also organize
an annual student conference that includes the Yumi Nakamura Prize in
Linguistics, which awards a cash prize to the top presentations at the conference.

PhD Studentship: Molecular mechanisms of membrane proteins
Design and Characterization of Bio-inspired Nanosensors Engineered by Assembly of Receptors and Ion Channels
The subject. We have devised a novel type of bio-inspired sensors, Ion-Channel Coupled Receptors
(ICCR), based on the fusion of receptors with an ion channel serving as an electrical probe. Binding of
a ligand to the receptor triggers opening of the associated ion channel and an increased ion flux that is
easily detectable using existing techniques. This concept was validated by the creation of ICCRs
between a potassium channel and several G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR) [cf. Moreau et al, 2008,
Nature Nanotech 3:620-5].
The thesis shall concern the structure-function study of receptor-channel interactions in existing ICCRs
and on the design and construction of new ICCRs. Work will involve molecular engineering, biophysics,
and bioinformatics. It should establish the foundation of high-performance bioelectrical sensors while
providing a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of GPCR activation and ion channel
gating.
Although this project has a strong biotechnological flavor, the approach shall remain very fundamental
with a strong focus on the structure and function of membrane proteins and on their interactions.
The place. The thesis will take place in the Channels lab within the Membrane Proteins Dept of the Institute for Structural Biology (www.ibs.fr/ laboratories/ membrane- protein-lab- lpm/transporters receptors-
and-ion). The Channels lab focuses on ion channels and membrane protein engineering and is recognized for its work on K-ATP channel and proteic biosensors.
IBS is a renowned institute in the field of structural and molecular biology. It is part of the Grenoble
scientific polygon with numerous research intitutes and colleges as well as several large instruments
such as the European Synchrotron. The site offers a stimulating scientific environment in the natural
surroundings of the French Alps.
The candidate. Strong academic background. Experience or interest in molecular biology, electrophysiology, or bioinformatics.The granting agency (CEA) will only consider candidates with top-tier academic records. There are no other restrictive conditions and foreigners can, and should, apply.
The position. The position is for three years starting in October 2010. The salary is very competitive

The Chair of Systems Design, ETH Zurich, offers a position for a PhD student working in the project "On the Interplay between Social Interactions and Software Architecture in Open Source" funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), starting as soon as possible.

Open scholarships for PhD and Postdoctoral studies The graduate school Biocatalysis in non-conventional media (BioNoCo) isoffering scholarships to perform PhD and postdoctoral studies. The graduate school,which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DeutscheForschungs gemeinschaft, DFG), is located at RWTH Aachen University withForschungszentr um Jülich and Heinrich-Heine- University Düsseldorf as associatedpartners.
The graduate school offers education and research in a stimulating environmentwithin the highly competitive area of White Biotechnology. Joint supervision in atleast two different teams, interdisciplinary research and close collaboration within theinternational community promote high level qualification and open interesting careeropportunities .

Project summary. ISIR (Institute of Intelligent Systems & Robotics) (former Laboratoire de
Robotique de Paris,) of Paris 6 University studies neuro-cognitive human-space interaction in order to design and realize prototypes of intelligent systems, robotics and mechatronics systems, highly autonomous and/or able to assist healthy and handicapped (especially visually impaired), in performing everyday life tasks. The provision of autonomous mobility for the visually impaired is a difficult but important societal problem. Solutions based on GPS and a digital map of the environment are not suitable because of the low, 10m, precision of GPS, poor satellite
signal reception in urban areas and indoors, and the difficulty of responding to changes in the environment. Artificial vision in the form of SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) provides a satisfactory solution for autonomous mobile robots. However, SLAM is not suitable for assisting the visually impaired, because human navigation is far more complex than that of a mobile robot. Human navigation leads to the definition of natural visual SLAM (SLAM-VN). SLAM-VN is a simulation of the visual perception-motion loop, including feedback from inertial
sensors to the imaging system, in analogy with the human vestibulo-ocular feedback.
This should reinforce the robustness of classical stereovision systems and solve the problem of the spatio-temporal instabilities caused by uneven ground and by sudden and unpredictable human movements. This thesis aims to define precisely the concept of SLAM-VN and model it in
hardware and software. We will use the ISIR convergent stereovision system to which we will add an inertial system, which will play the role analogous to the human vestibular system. The combined system is named intelligent glasses (IG). One of challenges of the IG system is the
correct synchronization and fusion of the visual information and the inertial information. The information about the environment obtained by SLAM-VN will be used for object recognition and tracking, and obstacle detection.
The Fisher-Rao metric will be used to quantify the accuracy with which the objects and obstacles can be described. This will lead to the design of new vision processing algorithms, never investigated before. 3D object localization (precision of ~ 0.5 m) will be established via
RANSAC type algorithms. Object tracking will use a classical approach such as a particle filter. The SLAM-VN model will be validated by experiments, including navigation in real environments by both the visually impaired and by the robot iCUB (European humanoid robotic platform of ISIR laboratory). Specifically, we are looking a PhD student to work on one of the following topics. 1) Signal processing and information- theoretic study of Cognitive radio 2) Application of random matrix theory to signal processing and communications 3) Signal processing and information- theoretic study of cooperative communications This project demands that the research student already possesses exceptional knowledge in advanced signal processing and communication together with very high mathematical ability and programming skills. In particular the PhD student needs to have prior knowledge in applied mathematics, multivariate statistical analysis, information theory and should be familiar with various wireless communication techniques. The awards cover approved fees and a tax-free maintenance allowance of £13,290 per annum and are available to UK, EU and overseas citizens.
